Twelve questions to ask about your business

Question MarkPaul Bradshaw of Online Journalism Blog has a list of very good questions to ask yourself if you’re in the news business and searching for an online business model. And who in the news business isn’t?

In a slide show he’s posted on SlideShare (it’s embedded here too), Paul suggests thinking about a model that doesn’t rely on advertising or subscriptions and to think outside of content – “people pay for platforms and services”.

Then he suggests working through the following questions:

What data do we have (crime stats, council minutes, sports data, biographies)?

Who would have an interest in it?

Where are they, online and offline?

How could it be packaged to service these people?

How could it be delivered to these people?

Why would they want this service?

What might they want to do with the data?

Who are our existing users?

What can they add to our data or services?

What would motivate them to do so?

What are the big issues/interest in our area (events, activities, industries)?

What services would fill a need there?

These are good questions and this has to be a useful exercise no matter what end of the business you’re in.
