A few things that crossed my radar recently. A rant about the failings of tech news and the (lack of) incentives causing it. From louisgray.com. I believe “fast food news” also can refer to the mass hysteria over making sure every site posts the news that a major browser or a major operating system has [...]

Common Craft on its success and business models

ReadWriteWeb have done a nice end-of-year profile on Common Craft, the folk who make the 'In Plain English' videos. It's a nice read and the part about why Common Craft decided to move away from its custom video service into its current licencing business model is interesting:

Not at all surprised to read tonight that ReadWriteWeb has done a deal with the New York Times to provide syndicated technology stories. It's a terrific achievement for ReadWriteWeb, showing it's well and truly come of age as an authoritative source of technology news. And it's a smart move by the New York Times to accept it can't be all things to all technology readers and join forces with another supplier.

The Beat Bloggers - a group of US journalists who are experimenting with using social networks in newsgathering - have posted about using games to tell the news. This might sound a little odd at first but it soon starts to make sense - it's another way of engaging readers and letting them have their say about what's going on in the world. The post points to a game that ReadWriteWeb has been running:

Richard MacManus's review of Alltop on ReadWriteWeb this week caught my eye for two reasons - the site seems worthy of exploration and he took a swipe at mainstream media's portrayal of blogs. Alltop is a simple-to-use site designed to make reading stories and blogs from across the web easier for people who've yet to get to grips with RSS feeds.

A digital CV sends a positive signal

I was just reading a ReadWriteWeb post about rebooting CVs to bring them up to date for today's market and it chimed with me. I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to see journalists move to using online CVs, especially if it links to evidence of their digital citizenry - blog, published stories, pictures, videos, social bookmarks, social networks and so on.
