This is the blog of Julie Starr. I write about the news business and consult on newsroom integration and change projects.
I am currently working on...
* Newsroom change management and web-and-print development for Fairfax Media NZ.
* Media liaison for Webstock 2012. It's going to be another great conference: here's the speaker list. Email me if you'd like to interview one of these smart people. (We'll do our best depending on everyone's availability.) julie@allaboutthestory.com.

A beatblogging success story
A nice story from one of the Beatbloggers about how using social networks - advertising that you're interested in hearing from residents of a community - can work a treat for rustling up stories. This is from US reporter Daniel Victor, who writes for the Patriot-News (Pennsylvania):
Using games to tell the news
The Beat Bloggers - a group of US journalists who are experimenting with using social networks in newsgathering - have posted about using games to tell the news. This might sound a little odd at first but it soon starts to make sense - it's another way of engaging readers and letting them have their say about what's going on in the world. The post points to a game that ReadWriteWeb has been running:
Wired uses Facebook group for science reporting
Wired science reporter Alex Madrigal is interviewed about his exploits so far in beat blogging.
Reporting through social networks throws up tech challenges
More from the beat blogging experiment, which involves 12 reporters in various US newsrooms using social networks and blogs in their reporting.
