Got a digital news project that needs funding?

Got a great idea for an open-source, digital, local news project? Need some money?

It’s not too late to apply for this year’s Knight News Challenge in the US. The deadline for entries has been extended until December 15 and Knight does sometimes fund projects outside the US.

They are looking for projects that:

  1. Use digital open-source media
  2. To distribute news and information
  3. In a geographic determined community (local community)

There are two categories of entry: open and closed. If you enter in the open category ‘the public will be able to review, rate and comment on your application’. If you enter the closed category your entry will be kept confidential during the selection process (but will be publicised if you are successful).

Applications are made on the website. You can see some of the former winners here. They include Everyblock.com, which I’ve blogged about a few times.

From their FAQ:

What is the Knight News Challenge?

The Knight News Challenge is a contest run by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, which has earmarked $25 million over a five-year period.

As much as $5 million will be given away this year. Anyone can apply.

The goal is to spur innovation in the delivery of information and news using digital media.

Whether it’s election coverage, crime statistics, little league scores, road conditions or anything else, we’re looking for smart, innovative solutions that connect people with the news and information that matters most to them.
