Hey Luis

Not to pimp my sector too much, but there's some good work going on here:

Matapihi http://matapihi.org.nz/ is for cross-searching pictorial colelctions from NZ libraries, museums, archives and galleries

DigitalNZ's search http://search.digitalnz.org incorporates the above and heaps more, from peer-reviewed NZ research to aerial photography to digitised copies of a NZ Chinese community newspaper.

Both are built using the DigitalNZ API, so there's a building block for "Search the world's cultural heritage" right there.

Cheerleading over now - Courtney

What would help could be to have a "[Google] Books" or "[Google] Schoolar" type of optimized/specialized search engine in the form of "Search Museums," "Search Libraries," "Search Art," "Search Archives"...

If I'm looking for Picasso's works in "[Google] Images" I usually got a lot of "images used in blogs and sites for 'decorative' effects."

(Use of the name of the search company is just for example, not any endorsement.)

Thanks for your comment and extra insight into the National Digital Forum and conference, Andy. Sincere apologies for omitting archivists - now remedied:)

Thanx Julie - a very succinct summary of some of the conversations and presentations that took place. The 8th NDF conference was the biggest yet and is run by a professional Conf Co (Paardekoopers) and a modest Planning Committee - volunteers of course for the GLAM sector (btw - plse don't forget the Archivists: GLAMs = Galleries, Libraries, Archives & Museums!), of which I was just one.

As you pointed out some of the problems are too big (or amorphous) to be neatly dealt with - starting or continuing discourse helps greatly, albeit at times frustrating.

The international speakers added great colour and perspective and most of them commented that their own countries (US/UK/Aust/Taiwan for eg) don't have a collective such as the 130+ institution member NDF, and to get such 345+ people together representing the GLAMs/Education/Media sections of the ICT society is a powerful exercise - I thought the collective intellect nearly raised the roof on Soundings on occasion!

Another "flavour" brought out was GeoData and it's increasing importance in the heritage content online realm for this sector. I think their are parallels with the (social) media and online world as you alluded to for other topics.

Thank you for your contribution via Twitter throughout the Conference - I thought Twitter and it's immediacy of communication brought a new dimension to the Conference this year - right from the Powhiri and Minister Nathan Guy's opening through to the "beating of the gong" at the close! Certainly I enjoyed contributing via that medium, and like others, from the audience as well - it was indeed a national digital "forum"!

See you next year.
